I go in to work early on Thursday morning.

This is my little secret. It’s not like I don’t have work to do in the office; I have tons. Despite my proclivity for fooling around during the day, I’m actually a very hard worker and have never been accused of letting my part of the team down. The engineers work together and I don’t want anyone to have a reason to out me for all my office hookups. If the work doesn’t get finished during the day, I make a point of coming in early.

I’ve never told anyone about my early mornings. No one even knows I have the key, other than Julian Donovan, who gave it to me. He also told me about the senior engineering position that’s going to be available. From the sounds of things, I’m in the running but so is Michael.

And when I get to my desk, who do I find at his?

“What are you doing here?” Michael demands, but the smile on his face suggests my early appearance is a good thing.

“I can ask you the same thing.” Trying to hide my own smile, I tuck my purse into my drawer in my desk. Michael’s thick hair has been slicked back; by the time I see him in the morning, his hair is dried and already falling forward into his eyes. He’s not much for products or for personal grooming. He’s clean, with no visible stains on his clothing and he smells good, a mixture of soap and deodorant. I’ve gone out with metrosexuals before and I prefer a man who takes less time getting ready than I do, and I’m pretty quick.

I think I prefer Michael for just about everything. The realization lessens my good mood.

Michael shrugs. “I’m having trouble sleeping and this project still needs some work. I’ve been here early the last few mornings.”

“You’ve got a dirty little secret,” I muse, avoiding my concern over his lack of sleep. He doesn’t need me to worry about things like that. He has a girlfriend; that’s her job.

Lately, I’ve been wondering if she’s up to the task. Michael hasn’t looked happy for the last few days and I can’t help wondering if she’s the cause.

I’m probably just imagining things.

Or maybe they had a fight. It could be that she’s denying him sex and he’s all bottled up, ready to explode at the slightest touch...

Could I make him explode? With a simple touch, a caress? If I reached out and grabbed him?

“More than one,” Michael says grimly.

I walk over to his desk and tip his coffee cup towards me. “No coffee yet?” I ask rather than demanding to know what his dirty secrets are. I find myself somewhat desperate to know.

It’s more difficult being friends and wanting more than I thought it would ever be. I’m more than attracted to Michael; I have to be honest about that now. The only question is, what am I going to do about it?

Is it really time to fluff my feathers, as Brienne puts it?

He has a girlfriend.
